  15. You can configure multiple network interface cards (NICs, also called
  16. network adapters) in a PC for use on the same network segment, but no
  17. two NICs in the PC can use the same protocol.
  18.  
  19. Installing NetBEUI violates this restriction because NetBEUI binds to
  20. all available adapters in the machine regardless of whether they are
  21. on the same physical network segment. If a PC containing two or more
  22. NICs uses the same protocol on more than one NIC in a given network
  23. segment, the system sees duplicate machine names due to the resulting
  24. NetBIOS name conflict, generates an error, and fails to start system
  25. services correctly.

  27. This problem does not affect routable protocols (TCP/IP, AppleTalk and
  28. NWLink) because when you install or reconfigure them you have to
  29. choose an NIC in Control Panel's Network configuration window, and
  30. this automatically disables the protocol's bindings to other adapters.
  31. When installing TCP/IP, for instance, you are forced to provide unique
  32. IP addresses to each system NIC, then choose one NIC as the "Windows
  33. Networking Adapter" in the "Windows Networking on TCP/IP (NetBIOS)"
  34. box of the TCP/IP Configuration window.

  36. You can manually configure multiple NICs in a PC by disabling NetBEUI
  37. bindings to network adapters other than the one you want to use for
  38. the NetBEUI protocol. Disable the following bindings:
  39.  
  40.  - Server to NetBEUI protocol to <adapter driver> to <adapter>
  41.  
  42.  - Workstation to NetBEUI protocol to <adapter driver> to <adapter>
  43.  
  44.  - NetBEUI protocol to <adapter driver> to <adapter>
  45.  
  46.  - NetBIOS Interface to NetBEUI protocol to <adapter driver> to
  47.    <adapter>
  48.  
  49. When you have disabled all of these bindings, network operations can
  50. proceed.
